Cargo Train Derailment

ATSDR collaborated with local organizations to investigate a freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. This is a recent ACE investigation; results will be available soon.

Background

On February 3, 2023, a freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, damaging approximately 50 cargo train cars. Twenty cars contained hazardous substances, including vinyl chloride, ethylene glycol, ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and isobutylene.

Approach

The Ohio Department of Health, Pennsylvania Department of Health, and ATSDR collaborated to investigate the event's effect on human and animal health.

  • Conducted a survey in Ohio and Pennsylvania of community members. The survey included information on pets and livestock. The survey took place at stand-up health resource centers, going door to door, and online.
  • Conducted a separate responder survey online.
  • Presented preliminary findings at separate community and responder meetings.
